Vermont 09 / Sat-Sun 3/4 Oct

Our flights yesterday went well and we picked up the rental car without a hitch. We got Chevy Cobalt. It’s underpowered but it is a comfortable car to drive and it gets good mileage.

We’ve worked out a routine now when we come up here. We first stop at a Target in Holyoke, MA to pick up supplies followed by a Stop & Shop in the same town to get groceries. In VT we stopped at Dutton Farms to get our supply of apples, cider, pie and Penny got a big cookie. Hey, we are on vacation. We will begin our diet when we get home. Then it’s on to the cabin.

We arrived about 5 PM and went about settling in—making the bed, lighting the fire and planning our Sunday. The weather was not going to be good for leaf peeping so my plan was to go on a covered bridge adventure in Southern New Hampshire.

Sunday began with church. This Sunday marked the completion of the priest’s 3rd year in Wilmington. He is a Black (rare in the Catholic church—rarer in VT) priest from the Islands. His style has improved since last year.

After Church I drove East on RT9 through Brattleboro and into NH. I was headed to a cluster of bridges in southwest NH. NH numbers each of its bridges and has them listed on-line. The history of each bridge is provided as well as basic directions to the location. Between those directions and the GPS we were successful in locating all the bridges we set out to see.

Bridge # 1 was NH bridge #1 and was just off the main hwy.

Bridge #2 : This one was more difficult to find and we use the GPS and some logical wandering to finally find it. This bridge had burned sometime in the past and was now restored.

Bridge # 3 found us talking with a couple that was biking the rail trail bridge tour. They ride their bikes on railroad right-of-ways to all the bridges in the area. They had a map showing all the bridges and I took a picture of it for reference.

Bridge # 4 was on Main ST in Swanzey and connects the 2 built-up portions of that town.

Bridge # 5 had loads of traffic and a sign for the rail trail that we used to find the last bridge on our list.

Bridge # 6 was easily found after referring to the sign.

We went to this area because it provided the best opportunity for some sunlight. It was supposed to rain in Wilmington and all areas north. You can see by the pictures that we had a mostly cloudy day.

We headed back to the cabin. We picked up some groceries at Shaw’s. Penny wanted to start cooking for the meal next week. I got some vanilla ice cream to go with the apple pie I got on Saturday. Apple pie alamode was dinner.
