Another Moving Experience

After the River Run we returned home for 5 days switched cars and headed back to Jacksonville to help out with C&C’s move.

My trailer bed had deteriorated over the 7-years I’ve had it.  It gets soaked every day by my neighbor’s sprinklers and even though I try to keep it protected Mother Nature wears the thing down.  Between the hot Sun and wet ness some of the boards had lost all their strength.

Before using the trailer for the move I had to replace the bed.  One would hope that the job could be done simply by buying 8 ft. 2x10s and slipping them in.  It’s not that easy.  The way the trailer is made the only way to just slip in 8 ft. boards would be to cut the floor rail out, put in the boards and weld the rail back on.  Since I don’t have a welder I worked out another method.  I got 10’ boards and cut them into 2-4’ 4” pieces and then made a 4” rabbet on the end of each

This way I could slip a board in in the front and one in the back and screw them together with the 4-inch overlap.  I took pictures along the way but not any of the finished product!

We drove over to Jacksonville on Saturday and went to church that evening so we could get an early start on Sunday.

Sunday Penny packed up the kitchen, K&T  packed books and I loaded the trailer with stuff from the laundry room and shed.  We filled the cargo area of the CRV with the boxes of books and kitchen stuff and made the first delivery up to the new place in Jacksonville.

Monday we drove Christy to work and then headed to High Springs. Penny continued on the kitchen and helped out in moving some stuff.  I loaded the CRV with glasses and other wedding stuff from the chicken coup.  The trailer I filled with all the bicycle stuff and some yard tools and the lawnmower. We also loaded their 2 kayaks on top of the CRV.

That was load #2.  We got back to Jacksonville and picked up Christy at work and then went to her house to unload.  WE also had a great dinner at a seafood restaurant in Christy’s new neighborhood.

Tuesday we again brought Christy to work. Then we brought Penny’s sewing machine in to a local place for repair and my drill into a warranty repair shop in Jacksonville and then headed down to High Springs for load #3.  By this point  time I was beginning to feel the effect of all the driving.  We loaded the CRV and trailer and helped Christian and his friend Chris load stuff into the rental truck.  Then it was back to Jacksonville to get Christy and unload stuff.

Wednesday we brought Christy to work but didn’t go to High Springs. Instead we stayed in Jacksonville with the intent to help unload the truck when it arrived.  We picked up Penny’s sewing machine and explored a park near Christy’s new place while we waited.  We also picked up a new storage shed for C&C as a housewarming gift.

When the truck showed up we helped empty it and then went and picked up Christy at work.  We had a nice dinner at Denny’s .

Thursday we took Christy to work – packed up our stuff-cleaned up after ourselves at the Feagins’s  and headed home.

River Run (Walk) 2013

This year the River Walk hit beautiful weather.  Mid-60s and Sunny.

I rode in with K&T and we spent some time at WJCT before finding our starting place.  The day started cold enough  to require a jacket for the first couple of miles.  Karen and I walked with her friend, Kerry, spinning a baton the whole way.Photo by kfeagins

The walk seemed easier today than it has been.  I think that the weather had a great deal to do with it-plus I’m lighter than I’ve been for any previous walk.

There were the usual spectators and dogs but no real characters this year.  It was still fun getting to spend time with Karen.

I remembered to moleskin my soles. I brought along a protein bar for snack and a protein drink for the finish.  There were plenty of bananas and beer at the finish.

The walkers came in from the side this year and although it was good for the functionality of the run it removed the thrill of the start of the race for the walkers.

Tim ran and walked and the ran the kid’s mile with Sophie.

We got food at Wendy’s afterwards-that’s part of the tradition now.

Now I’m a little stiff and achy but feeling OK.

Ready for the Walk

Having the River Run to prepare for is a good thing.  It forces me to stay capable of walking a long distance.  Since hiking is something Penny and I enjoy when we travel keeping the walking ability is useful.

Today I comfortably walked 7 miles.  That’s close enough to the 9 miles we will do this coming Saturday.  So I’m ready.

Now I have to keep my walking up after the big race is over.
