Kayaking 2 Consecutive Days

The weather, our schedule and health finally aligned and we got out in the kayaks.  Penny and I went out on Tuesday morning and I went out alone on Wednesday.

Dolphin showed up both days.  We only had a few other watercraft sharing the bayou.  It was a relaxing and enjoyable time.

Here are some pictures:

This Week

My week can be summed up very simply as -  the fence.  I replaced 64 ft of the fence on the West side of our yard.  Between  clearing out vines and brush, demolishing the old fence, putting in the new fence posts and then attaching the fence panels the week was pretty well shot.  At least everything went well.  There were no major issues.  The weather was OK, too.  Monday and Tuesday mornings actually started out cool.  I finished actual construction on Thursday and have been cleaning up

Here is the finished product.

I still have some clean up to do and dispose of the pile of old fence.

The only other worthwhile news is that the garden is coming along nicely this year.  We picked and ate 2 squash this week.

I also planted 2 scuppernong grape vines.  I don’t expect grapes this year but at least I finally got some planted.  These are my favorite grapes and eating them reminds me of summer swims at Nana’s house on Poquito Bayou.

We had Pre-Cana all day today and had possibly the best small group discussions we’ve had.  The people running pre-cana are leaving town and we don’t know who, if anyone will take the lead for the next one.

Hawaiian Mother’s Day

Penny chose our favorite little Hawaiian restaurant (Papa Nalu Aloha Grill) for her   Mother’s Day lunch. We celebrated yesterday to avoid crowds.  We had a great visit and the food was the usual fantastic.

We even stopped at a couple of antique malls on the way home followed by a MacDonald's hot fudge sundae for our 3 o’clock snack.

The sunset looked OK so we went to our heron picture spot and took lots of pictures.  Here are some of mine:IMG_4164

Penny got the best shot of the night when she caught two herons squabbling over a perch.

Talk about angry birds!

We had a good day with lots of time together.

Garden Report

The garden is going well this year.  I decided to neaten the garden up some and make it as automatic as possible so I can run off for a week or 2 and not lose everything.

I made a raised platform to grow the tomatoes on.  This way they can bee in the back row, get sunlight and not block the sun from the other plants.  The irrigation is the same as last year except the water lines are better organized so I can get in between the rows of plants without stepping over any.  Everything is covered with mulch to keep down weeds.  I’m growing only vegies that I know we will use.

Here’s what it looked like a week ago:

Last year my squash was a flop.  This year it looks like they will do well.

Since the pictures were taken the plants have really taken off.

Back to Jacksonville

We made our monthly visit to Jacksonville and it was good.  Once again the entire immediate family got together and since it is so much easier now that both daughters live in the same city I see this happening a lot now.

On this trip we attended an opera written and performed by kindergarteners, went to a butterfly festival, shared 2 meals prepared by Penny and got to spend some good quality family time.

The opera was actually well done.  Here it is in pictures:

The butterfly festival was fun and we got up close and personal with a number of the critters.

Penny had 7 or 8 or more butterflies on her the whole time!

The girls made vases at a craft table – Penny got flowers for them and we decorated the dinner table with them.

My next blog will be a garden report.
