The Diet

I’ve been on my doctor-recommended diet now for a week and a half.  I wanted to wait until I fully understood how I might manage this thing before I wrote about it.

It’s not impossible to keep on the diet but it requires a change in lifestyle organized around 5-7 meals a day with very specific foods to provide correct caloric content with a proper distribution of lean protein, fat and the right kind of carbs.  There is no room for prepared foods and limited items that one could get eating out.  Some days menus are more portable than others so travelling will take either tremendous organization and planning or a hybrid diet sticking to as reasonable foods as possible or just dropping the diet for a period and accepting the consequences.

The menu contains lots of fish, chicken and turkey jerky along with Whey protein shakes to provide lots of lean protein.  Fat and carbs comes from various beans, vegetables, fruits and whole grain rice or oatmeal.

The first couple of days on the diet Penny and I were overwhelmed.  Between buying the food, preparing it, eating it and cleaning up it seemed that all we could do all day, everyday was work on all things diet.  Penny formally resigned from the diet on day 4 but now helps me out with meal prep.  She is remaining on the diet for the most part.  She is just more comfortable not feeling all the responsibility for making meals on a rigid timetable.  She now helps when she is comfortable (which is a lot ).

Last week we skipped our usual Waffle House breakfast.  This week we didn’t.  I can eat pretty close to the diet’s requirement for breakfast out.  So we will still be doing Famous Amos in Jax.

A month ago I couldn’t envision myself eating things like kale, bok choy and adzuki beans.  All 3 of those are in today’s menu.

This diet is supposed to provide the calories you need when you need them. The volume of food is huge but the calories are low.I’m not going hungry, in fact, many meals it is difficult to eat everything.  For the most part the food is tasty.  The kale is cooked in a spicy soup for example.  There are a couple of bland items but nothing is really yucky-except for artichoke hearts which we are not eating.

I’ll try to stick with the diet (read as Lifestyle) as reasonably as I can and see if it has the desired results.  I weighed myself after week 1 and I was down 5 lbs.  I would like to see at least that much come off each month so even if the 5 lbs in a week is a fluke I won’t be disappointed as long as the trend is in the correct direction.

Yes, there is exercise involved also.  So far mine has only been walking.  I plan to add more over time since I don’t have any pain issues to use as an excuse any more.

Back From Jax

We went to Jacksonville this weekend to attend a meeting of the Florida Lighthouse Association and to visit K&T and C&C.  It turned out to be a fun weekend.

Friday night was a social hour and also the night of Sophie’s school Valentine’s dance.  Penny got Sophie a new dress for the dance and she looks great in it.

On Saturday we went to the meeting and also visited the 2 lighthouses on Naval Station Mayport.

Saturday evening Penny and I took  the grandkids out to the  Alpha Dog for hot dogs while T&K had a date night.

Sunday was church and Famous Amos and a look at the house K&T put an offer on.  It’s a nice house. Tim didn’t come with us because his cold was terrible on Sunday.

It was cold enough for the girls to wear their new winter coats.

Sunday afternoon Penny and I went to High Springs, delivered their quilt and spent some time with them that included coffee and pie.

Now we are back home safely after enjoying this wonderful weekend.

First Epcot Visit

The Feagins just got back from a visit to Disney and it reminded me of a video I saw there on my first visit to Epcot.  We didn’t have YouTube at the time and I couldn’t find any way to get a copy.  I just remembered that it was inspirational.  I got to see it at Epcot 3 times before they replaced it.

The video is on YouTube now surreptitiously (and shaky) filmed by someone in the audience.  This was state-of-the-art video for 1996 and I find that I am still inspired by it.

My Turn

This time it’s not Sophie or Lucy with the ear infection – it’s Grandpa.  Today marks the 2-week anniversary of my cold .  It’s had ups and downs.  Yesterday I thought I had finally turned the corner.  Midday today I found I had an earache.  I have a doctor’s appointment next Wednesday.  I’ll have to see how my system fights this thing and decide if I need a doctor sooner.

Yesterday I found out my wife is NOT a cheap date.  I took her to lunch, a movie (The Descendants) and dinner- and shopping.

The movie was good.  It moves at a slow pace and there is not a lot of action.  I commented to Penny that it felt more like a book than a movie.  The performances are good and if you like character studies you should like this.

Are you ready for Super Bowl Sunday?

Kids Read and Write

Karen related in her blog about Sophie reading signs and writing. I reminded her about her (Karen) reading the road sign “NOT A THROUGH STREET” and thinking the road wasn’t completed yet.  That story is usually followed by our story of Christy reading the SHOE CITY sign as “Show Kitty”.

All this got me to look back into my journal I kept of the kids growing up and that led to Karen’s church rules:

Church rulse

Be Kwiit

But you can wisper

go get a Book

so you now what to sing

and shake hands say prarse and bleses

-----------------------------------------------

That’s not bad for a 4 1/2-year-old (about the same age as Sophie!)  At this time Christy could knew her alphabet and the sounds of many letters including L,P,B,T,S…

This is also the time period when Christy told me we needed to wash her hands because her “thumbs were blurry”.
