The Smartphone

Penny and I now have smartphones – Android- Samsung Galaxy s3. We finally upgraded and got our phones on Monday-almost 2 weeks ago now. The phone is easy to use. I’ve stumbled a few times and accidently made calls. Otherwise most of the functions are intuitive and easy to use-and there are apps for everything , many of them are quite useful as we found in our trip this week.

We went to Birmingham last Wednesday and the phone proved its value. I easily surveyed the restaurants in the area of the hotel – saw their location, their pricing and ratings.  We selected a place for dinner where Penny could eat with her restricted diet and knew how to get there before we left the room.

The utility of the phone was highlighted when Penny’s oral surgery started acting up while we were at our meeting in Birmingham. She called her doctor and he sent a prescription to CVS. The prescription was now in the CVS system. We were easily able to find the closest CVS, get directions to it, and call the location all from the same screen on the phone. We picked up the prescription during our lunch break  and the only problem we had was the traffic

Now that I’ve had some time to learn and play with the phone I can see why the 18-24 year-old crowd can’t live without them.  They’ve grown up never wanting for instant information and never having to wait  to communicate with the world.  I grew up in a much more private disconnected world.  What we have now would have been considered magic back then.

I’ve downloaded apps-dictionary,urban spoon, skymaps, photo editor, shopping list, jumble, handyman calculator, ringtone maker, google earth, upc scanner and all the normal calandar, clock and search apps. I still have to figure out how to take and send a picture on Instagram.

The phone is starting to become part of my daily routine.  My biggest issue is the size of the thing.  There is no easy way to carry it around and have quick access to it.  I’ll eventually figure out the best way.
